Playa de las Catedrales - Shaped by the Tide

Galicia, Spain - One year ago, almost to the day — around February 14th, 2025 — I arrived at Playa de las Catedrales in northern Spain at low tide. The beach was nearly empty. The sky clear. The air cool, but gentle.

And then I saw it.

Towering arches carved into stone. Vast, open vaults like the nave of a cathedral. Walls shaped by centuries of tide and wind. It felt less like arriving at a beach and more like stepping into a sacred space designed by water.

It was almost too beautiful — the kind of beauty that catches in your throat before you even realize why.

At low tide, the ocean retreats and reveals its architecture. You can walk where the sea usually rules. Small waterfalls trickled down the rock faces. Deep caves opened unexpectedly. Narrow passages invited exploration. Every few meters felt like discovering a new chamber.

Above the cliffs, in the simple restaurant overlooking the Atlantic, I ordered a café con leche. The mild February sun warmed my face while the salty air carried that clean, northern freshness that feels almost medicinal. There was no rush. Just quiet. Just space.

But the sea never stands still.

Gradually, almost imperceptibly, the water began to return. Meter by meter it reclaimed the sand. The vast open corridors narrowed. The caves darkened. The arches stood unchanged — but the access disappeared.

It was not dramatic. It was steady. I walked one final round before the ocean swallowed the pathways again. Watching the tide rise here is part of the experience — not something to fear, but something to respect.

Standing there, I felt small — not reduced, but opened. Not diminished, but deeply aware. The kind of smallness that does not make you lesser, only more attentive.

There is something profoundly moving about witnessing nature’s beauty in motion — knowing it will transform completely within hours.

That evening, a few kilometers away, we parked our camper on a cliff above the sea. The night was filled with the sound of waves below — constant, rhythmic, grounding. Sleeping there felt like being suspended between sky and ocean.

Playa de las Catedrales is not just beautiful.
It is powerful.
And humbling.

Some places impress you. Others stay with you. This one stayed.
